Sprint CEO Dan Hesse Reveals First LTE Markets: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio

sprintlteNot wanting to be outdone by their larger rivals, Sprint also has a big LTE-related announcement today. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse just confirmed to everyone at Citigroup's 22nd Global Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference that Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio will be the company's first LTE markets. Those cities are just the tip of the iceberg though, as Sprint ultimately wants their LTE network lit up in ten markets before the first half of 2012 rolls around. Here's hoping that the coasts get a little LTE love too, as the three of the announced markets are in a single (admittedly large) state, and the other isn't that far away from them.

Anuj Bidve's body brought to India; last rites in Pune

Pune student Anuj Bidve's body was today brought here in a flight by his distraught parents from Britain where he was shot dead last month.

"The body of Anuj Bidve landed here in a British Airways flight from London at 11.45 AM. His parents will take the body to Pune," a senior airport official said.

The last rites will be performed in Pune in the evening.

The 23-year-old engineering student at the Lancaster University was shot dead on December 26 in the British city of Salford in an apparent hate crime.

The grief-stricken parents of Anuj had yesterday made a tearful visit to the spot where the Indian student was shot dead.

Shattered by what they called was an incomprehensible loss, the parents had said that the visit was an "exceedingly difficult" one to make, but they had chosen to come to Salford to witness first hand the place where their son breathed his last so as to keep his memories alive all their life.

"There are no words, the world is finished for us, this is what I can say," a sorrowful Subhash Bidve, the father of the 23-year-old, had told reporters in Salford.

British Prime Minister David Cameron had rued that Bidve's life had been "cruelly and brutally ended" and had offered "huge sympathy" to the visiting parents on behalf of his country.

"An absolutely horrific act has taken their son away from them, and it is absolutely essential the Greater Manchester Police do everything they can to get to the bottom of what happened and make sure the person is rightly brought to justice and there is a very tough punishment. It's unacceptable to have this sort of crime going on in our country," he had said.

Kanye West: The Anatomy Of A Twitter Spree

Have trouble connecting the dots on Kanye's string of tweets? MTV News breaks it down.
By Rob Markman

Kanye West
Photo: Getty Images

Kanye West has never had a shortage of ideas, and on Wednesday night into Thursday morning (January 5), the rap star spoke — or, rather, wrote — his mind on Twitter in a 91-message manifesto.

'Ye, who is currently in London, went off on a gang of topics, including his women's fashion line, the Grammys, his design dreams for the MTV Video Music Awards and the vision for his new 22-division company, DONDA. Unorganized but informative, Yeezy put the string of tweets into context on his 39th post, writing: "This is just a train of thought .. but figure it's better to read than trained thoughts."

If you had trouble following 'Ye's 24-hour stream of creative consciousness, don't worry — MTV News has you covered with this breakdown:

Wednesday, 1 p.m.
A gracious Yeezy takes to Twitter to thank everyone for supporting his women's fashion line, which he unveiled in Paris back in October. Two hours later, 'Ye corrects reports that the line is called DW.

Key Tweet: "The name of the line is Kanye West not DW... The Dw was a design element placed on the invite in homage to my mom : )"

Wednesday, 7 p.m.
With plenty of time lapses between tweets, no one could have guessed what West had in store in the hours to come. He clearly started off slow, quoting Da Vinci for his fourth tweet of the day.

Key Tweet: " 'Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.' - Leonardo Da Vinci"

Wednesday, 9 p.m.
This just in: Kanye West is without representation after Cara Lewis got her Jerry Maguire on.

Key Tweet: "More clarity... I have no agency representing me currently... William Morris was fired after Cara lewis quit. I love Cara Lewis : )"

Wednesday, 11 p.m.
West picks up the action. Inspired by his fashion workspace, Yeezy talks about how challenging and fun it is to work on clothing designs. It's been an eight-year journey for the Louis Vuitton Don, who turned down offers to do an urban clothing line in favor of something more upscale. How are his fashion endeavors funded, you ask? All the Kanye concert tickets you've bought, of course.

Key Tweet: "I did the first fashion show out of my own pocket and used the money I made touring to follow my passion."

Wednesday, midnight
'Ye goes on a tear during the midnight hour, sending a whopping 48 tweets. It was approximately 5 a.m. in London, and Kanye couldn't sleep because his dreams kept him "woke." And what dreams he has. The rapper recounts his days hopping from Japan to Rome to Paris, interning at Fendi, working with Louis Vuitton, being courted by Versace and designing his Air Yeezys for Nike. What, you thought West was a newbie to the fashion game? No, he learned how to design shoes at the Giuseppe Zanotti factory and broke bread with fashion luminaries like Azzedine Alaïa. Things weren't all good, though. The Chicago MC/producer admits that the language barrier in Paris hindered him some.

West rattles on, reminiscing about the times he spent fur shopping with his mother, Donda West, who died in 2007. Kanye then reveals that he was in talks to become a creative director for a possible "Jetsons" Movie. (West ..."Heartless" video.) West showcased art inspired by the iconic animated series in his 2008 "Heartless" video.

Of course, no Yeezy rant would be complete without some type of Grammy commentary, and this time, the outspoken rapper noted that he appreciated all his 2012 nominations.

The biggest news of the night came when Kanye announced that he had started a 22-division design company called DONDA. He hopes DONDA will group free thinkers and various professionals in a creative space to help simplify and improve the human experience. The company's mission: "To marry our wants and needs," West writes.

Key Tweet: "DONDA will be comprised of over 22 divisions with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford..."

Thursday, 1 a.m.
Continuing to detail his DONDA experience, 'Ye says the Watch the Throne Tour, with its stunning visual cubes, was just a small part of what the company can do. He aims to one day present seven screens onstage. He's taking 10 steps at a time, he said, with plans to design for the 2016 Olympics and the MTV Video Music Awards — imagine that!

Before ending his day of Twitter enlightenment, a compassionate 'Ye turns his attention toward education, writing that he and "Otis" video director and noted filmmaker Spike Jonze want to create a summer school that experiments with new curriculums for children. Why can't kids use iPhones while taking tests? Yeezy wonders.

He hasn't bought a chain or a car in two years, Kanye writes. Instead, he reinvests his dollars into creativity and his grand scheme to change the world for the better.

Key Tweet: "We need to take what Michael Jackson felt and [Alexander] Mcqueen and Steve Jobs and we need make things better..."

Non-league football: Appleby is staying to win promotion

STEVE Appleby is staying on as Wisbech manager - and he?s determined to lead the club to promotion.

The Fenmen chief admitted he was contemplating his future over the festive period after growing increasingly frustrated at the high number of refereeing decisions he believes are going against his team.

But Appleby has now confirmed he will remain in the Town hotseat for at least the remainder of this season ? news he delivered in the wake of a 4-0 home success over Newmarket in the Ridgeons Premier Division yesterday which left the club four points off the top two spot they?ll need to secure promotion.

Appleby said: ?It was a much better day all-round and the results elsewhere also went for us.

?I always said we could have a real go at promotion providing we were in the mix at the turn of the year and that?s definitely the case. And I owe it to the club and the fans to stay on as manager. I?ll definitely be here until the end of the season and we?ll see how things are then.?

Midfield men Ollie Gale and Stephen Reid had Wisbech in control by the midway-point of the opening half.

A penalty from top-scorer Chris Bacon and a third goal in three games from fellow frontman Nick Davey sealed a smooth victory.

But it wasn?t such a good day for Fenland neighbours March whose five-match winning run came to an end as they went down 3-2 at Fakenham in the Ridgeons First Division.

They twice led in the opening quarter of the contest thanks to a fifth goal in as many matches from Ondre Odain and a Gav Cooke free-kick.

Odain was only millimetres away from salvaging a point when seeing a late effort deflect against the crossbar.

Boss Brett Whaley admitted: ?We weren?t really good enough in any area of the pitch and that?s a disappointment. This was the sort of game we had to get something from if we are serious about going up.?

Fellow promotion hopefuls Stamford have now won just once in their last eight Evo-Stik Division One South matches after being held to a 1-1 draw by New Mills at the Premier Kitchens Arena.

The Daniels, who remain in the final play-off place, fell behind after seven minutes but were level four minutes later when wideman Nathan Watson?s delivery was turned into his own net by a visiting defender.

But Tommy Brookbanks men were then guilty of wasting good chances in front of goal while also seeing a couple of strong penalty shouts ignored.

Brookbanks said: ?New Mills still really fancy their chances of promotion so this isn?t a bad point by any means.

?We didn?t take our chances though and things didn?t go our way with the penalty appeals.?

HOLBEACH boss John Chand hailed his players for ending their daunting United Counties League Premier Division festive fixture list in winning style.

The Tigers were mightily aggrieved to go down at table-toppers King?s Lynn on Boxing Day and felt another two points got away when they ended Long Buckby?s 100 per cent record on New Year?s Eve.

But there were smiles all round in the opening fixture of 2012 as Chand?s men saw off fifth-placed St Ives 2-0 at Carters Park yesterday.

?It was really important to get back to winning ways and we managed it thanks to an excellent performance,? said Chand.

Skipper Jamie Stevens headed the opener midway through the first half before star attacker Andrew Tidswell doubled the Holbeach advantage just after the hour.

There are three UCL Premier Division matches involved local teams tonight (3 January).

Yaxley can climb out of the relegation zone with victory over Blackstones in an In2itive Park derby clash providing Sleaford don?t pick up a positive result when they entertain Spalding.

Deeping entertain S & L Corby.

NEW signing Niks Salvanieks opened his Huntingdon account with a Bank Holiday Monday brace.

The Latvian frontman is on loan for a month from Cambridge City and notched twice in a 4-0 success at Wootton.

Declan Rogers hit the other two goals to leave Town occupying second spot and on course for promotion.

Bourne enjoyed a fine day at the same level as they swept past Raunds 4-0.

Jason Kilbride and Glenn Spearink both struck twice for the struggling Wakes who fielded debutant Matt Gilson in goal.

Gilson has recently moved to the area from Suffolk.

NY pharmacy shooting a question of who fired gun (AP)

SEAFORD, N.Y. ? A modest shrine of flowers and American flags was placed near the front door of a pharmacy on New York's Long Island on Monday, steps from where an off-duty federal agent who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan was mortally wounded while trying to intervene in a pharmacy holdup.

Detectives, meanwhile, were conducting ballistics tests, interviews and likely reviewing video surveillance from nearby stores to unravel the sequence of events that led to the New Year's Eve killing of veteran ATF Agent John Capano, as well as the gunman, a career criminal who had served time in prison for armed robberies.

Many questions remain about their deaths. Chiefly, who shot them? Though the robber, identified by police as 43-year-old James McGoey of Hampton Bays, was armed with a pellet gun, police have not said whether he fired at Capano or whether Capano was armed. And two other men were present, one an off-duty NYPD officer and the other a retired Nassau County police lieutenant.

As they continue to try to determine what happened, police have given few details about the moments leading up to the shootings.

At about 2 p.m., McGoey went into Charlie's Family Pharmacy, a quiet family run store in Seaford and announced a holdup, police have said. Capano was in the store at the time. He is believed to have followed McGoey toward the door and confronted him.

At about the same time, someone ran into a deli several doors down owned by the retired Nassau County officer and told of the robbery in progress. The retired officer and the off-duty NYPD officer, who was a customer in the deli, went to the pharmacy. When they arrived, they saw Capano and McGoey in a skirmish outside the store. It is unclear who fired the next shots, but Capano and McGoey ended up dying of gunshot wounds.

If investigators determine Capano was killed by so-called friendly fire, it would mark the second such shooting in the suburban county in 2011. In March, a Nassau police officer in plainclothes was shot to death by a transit authority officer in Massapequa Park.

Nassau County Police Lt. Kevin Smith, a department spokesman, declined to comment on specific aspects of the investigation Monday. He would not elaborate on whether images of the shooting had been captured on camera but did say that it's become standard in investigations for the department to try to find surveillance video.

The shooting was the second deadly holdup in a pharmacy on Long Island in 2011; in June, a gunman opened fire in a drugstore about 30 miles east in Medford, killing two employees and two customers before fleeing with a backpack filled with painkillers.

McGoey had four robbery convictions on his record, three of which were pharmacy holdups, between 1990 and 2000, court records indicate. He was released from prison in August 2010.

Armed robberies at pharmacies in the U.S. rose 81 percent between 2006 and 2010, from 380 to 686, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Several physicians on Long Island have been arrested in an ongoing federal probe of prescription painkiller abuse.

The Seaford pharmacy was open Monday, but a clerk behind the counter said no one there wanted to talk about the shooting.

A funeral Mass for Capano, 51, was scheduled for Friday at St. William the Abbott Roman Catholic Church in Seaford.

"To come back and to be killed on New Year's Eve on the main street in his hometown community is just a horrible tragedy after everything he's gone through in his career," said U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford. King said his wife had taught Capano in fourth grade and the two families were close.

Capano, a 23-year veteran of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, taught U.S. military and local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq how to investigate blasts, said Rory O'Connor, assistant special agent in charge in the ATF's New York office. He lived in nearby Massapequa and was married with two children. He was at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for his father, Jimmy, a retired New York City police officer. King said the elder Capano was known as the "unofficial mayor" of Merrick Road, the main thoroughfare in Seaford.

GOP Rivals Court Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - With time running short, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and other Republican presidential contenders argued Sunday that they could beat President Barack Obama as they worked to persuade undecided Iowa Republicans aching to win the White House to choose them over chief rival Mitt Romney.

"I'm the candidate that actually was able to win in states, as a conservative, in getting Democrats and independents to vote for us," Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who is surging in the race and is a favorite among cultural conservatives, said in an interview on CNN. "Mitt Romney has no track history of doing that."

Paul, a libertarian-leaning Texas congressman who Romney has said is outside the GOP mainstream, countered the suggestion that he's a fringe candidate. In an interview with ABC from his home state, where he was spending the weekend, Paul insisted: "I'm electable. I've been elected 12 times in Texas, when people get to know me."

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum speaks during a campaign appearance at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame on Saturday in Knoxville, Iowa.

With Romney in a position of strength in Iowa, both Santorum and Paul went directly at the former Massachusetts governor's chief argument - that he is the most electable Republican in a head-to-head matchup against Obama next fall. They hope they can sway the roughly half of likely caucus-goers who say they are undecided or willing to change their minds two days before the leadoff presidential caucuses.

A Des Moines Register poll released Saturday showed Romney and Paul locked in a close race, with Santorum rising swiftly to challenge them. Nearly half of likely Iowa caucus-goers view Romney as the Republican most likely to win the general election. He was far ahead of Santorum and Paul, who was viewed as the least likely to win.

Those two are fighting against the notion in GOP circles that their bases of support are narrow and neither would be able to cobble together the diverse voting coalition necessary to beat Obama in November. Paul attracts legions of backers who put states' rights above much else, while Santorum - an anti-abortion crusader - is popular among Christian conservatives who make up the base of the Republican Party.

In contrast, Romney has styled himself during this campaign as a Republican able to attract a broad spectrum of voters. As polls showed him in strong standing in Iowa in the past week, he has redoubled his effort to portray himself as the business-savvy executive with national appeal who is best able to defeat Obama on the campaign's most pressing issue, the economy.

Although the race remains fluid, it appeared that Romney's carefully crafted plan to avoid underperforming in Iowa, where he campaigned little until last week, may be working, given a divided GOP electorate torn between several more conservative candidates and Paul's appeal to libertarians.

The issue of what type of candidate to choose cuts to the heart of why the Iowa race is so volatile; an NBC/Marist poll last week showed nearly even percentages of Iowa caucus-goers want a candidate who shares their values as want a candidate who can beat Obama.

"The first thing you see when you talk to any Iowa Republican is that desire to beat Barack Obama," Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn said on CNN.

Mindful of that, both Romney and Santorum canvassed the state Sunday as they cast themselves as the strongest contender.

Romney was set to appear in Atlantic and Council Bluffs as he works to maximize the edge he holds in critical areas, especially those he won in his second-place finish here four years ago.

Santorum, for his part, was campaigning deep into GOP-rich rural northwest Iowa Sunday, with stops in conservative counties won by Mike Huckabee during the former Arkansas governor's victorious campaign here four years ago.

As he met voters, his final ad for Iowa TV called him "a full spectrum conservative" who is most likely to beat Obama and the "trusted conservative who gives us the best chance to take back America."

WJC: Canada edges US in New Year's Eve battle

CANADA 3 vs. USA 2

Edmonton, AB - Just as they've done throughout the tournament, Canada dismantled its opponent.

But only through 20 minutes.

In a game called meaningless by many, the bitter on-ice temperament was as prevalent as always in a 3-2 Canadian win over the United States.

The US' loss to the Czech Republic meant that the visiting side was sent to the relegation round, while Canada had automatically advanced to the semis without having to overcome the disappointed, but driven, American squad in an intense New Year's Eve battle.

Nothing was on the line but national pride; and, sometimes, that brings out the best between nations brought up with winning inside-the-rink attitudes. On this night, again, and as they have been throughout the 2012 World Junior Championship, Canada was the better team.

16,000-plus cheered them on, lungs burning as the US' Jarred Tinordi picked up an undisciplined roughing minor 5:10 into the game. Wasting little time in rising the masses, Jonathan Huberdeau located Mark Stone in the slot, who scored his tournament-leading seventh 29 seconds into the power-play.

"It was a good start, but we know we have to play a full 60 in the semis," said the goal-scorer. "We talk about [having a good start] a lot. So far, so good. Nothing changes going ahead. We want to make sure that we're mentally prepared to start the game quickly.

"The coaches are telling me where to go to get the puck, and it's obviously working," he added about his totals. "I'm going to keep getting to those spots and Huberdeau, (Ryan) Strome, are going to keep getting me the puck."

"They prepare really well and they're going to come out and play their best hockey right away," added US goalie Jack Campbell. "Everyone knows that about Canada. Their coach made a great game plan and everyone executed."

It was as loud as it was during the Oilers' miraculous post-season run in 2006, and it was all that was needed for Team Canada to send the hometown crowd home with a smile and gold medal hopes.

But, in a blink, it was 2-0. Stone collected his second point, working the Americans down low with outstanding individual labour, pawing aside oncoming checkers and centering the puck to Jaden Schwartz alone in the slot.

Upstairs it went. The horn sounded, those 16,000-plus rose once more and the rout was on. For a moment.

With the crowd roaring, serenading US netminder Jack Campbell with a decibel-breaking jeer, Brett Connolly raced down the wing; no one else in sight but the goalie and a slim opening on his blocker side, which was picked with ease as the red and white established a commanding three-goal lead.

"We're happy with the win," Schwartz said. "It was a good game; it was tight-checking and it was good because we're going to learn from it. We're excited with the win, and we're excited for another round."

What they'll learn is the need to put teams away. Still up 3-0 in the third, the US stormed back as Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker each tallied to make it a one-goal game, setting the stage to a compelling conclusion.

"It's good to go through some adversity like that, because we're probably going to face a little down the road," Stone explained. "It wasn't that tough [to remain focused]. We all had the right mindset in this locker room and we're taking it game-by-game. The US was our next one and we battled pretty hard."

"We're going to learn from it," Schwartz added. "At the time we weren't happy that they were taking it to us, but give the US credit, they came at us hard. It's a learning curve and it's going to help us.

"We had to relax a little bit and get back to our game plan. They were coming hard and we needed to calm down a little bit, start making plays and start making smart plays; chipping pucks deep and keeping it down there."

Canada will complete the tournament in Calgary, where and equally as boisterous, red and white-clad crowd will welcome them Tuesday night at Scotiabank Saddledome to begin.
